Treasure trail...
Yes, whilst it is a little cliched, it still is remarkably effective. When I booked a trekking holiday for my (now ex) girlfriend and me to Iceland a few years back, I got a token item (such as a rucksack, hiking boot, mess tin etc) and hid it in each room with a clue on it and followed her round the house 'til she found them all. Final one was an Iceland shopping back (Iceland being a cheap-o supermarket) and I said put them together. Then I gave her the tickets and itinerary. I guarantee that even at 40, he will still enjoy a treasure hunt!
