I did this too, as a curious child. I held the flash against my eye, and pushed the button. Pow! Blind! I don't remember it hurting but I was rather surprised, and it took about half an hour before I could see shades of dark and light.
I was on a school camp at the time and decided against telling the teachers as I thought they would a) panic and b) take me to hospital.
I wonder if it did any permanent damage. I wonder if I should do it again. Hmm.
