Probably the human animal noticed the other animals
scoffing things and thought, "Ooh, must give that a try". I imagine oftentimes the next words said animal uttered were "Ugh!" and/or "Maybe if I chuck a bit of fire on it?" or similar. And snails are yum in garlic sauce.
