We're not irish..and my family do this!! None of us are small and dark so we had to base it on the most male person. As my dad was the only male, he won. Until my sister got married to a small dark haired man. He came to stay for new years and was unaware of the tradition, until his was handed a piece of coal and told to climb over the garage.
