Before they were famousBooks Etc in Charing Cross road was undergoing refurbishment, and so they needed someone at the front door to tell people it was still open and point them in the right direction. It was a cushy job, and I used to spend most of my time with my nose in a book. One particular book was becoming quite popular at the time, and I was enjoying it very much when a woman walked in with a small girl in hand.
The girl whispered 'Mummy, he's reading your book!'. The woman smiled and said to me 'Do you want me to sign it? I'm the author'.
'Wow, that's great', I replied. 'But actually, it's not really my copy, it's just a shop one. I'm really enjoying it, though'.
'Thanks', she says. 'Don't tell them I'm here, or they'll ask me to sign the whole lot'.
'No problem.'
