As a footnote...The film is referenced heavily towards the end of Tarantino's Death Proof (the only bit of that film that I enjoyed!) and Primal Scream released an album partly inspired by the film, notably featuring a track entitled "Kowalski" (the main character's name).
I first watched this film aged about 14 when it was on late at night on TV, and have watched it hundreds of times since. I still don't fully understand it, and don't think I ever want to. I like it that way.
