Ah.Well, back when I took abnormal psychology the term was manic depression, and somewhere along the line it got changed to bipolar. I've never liked that change as manic depression always struck me as being much more descriptive of what it's actually like.
In case you're interested, Kay Jamison wrote an excellent book on the subject called An Unquiet Mind.
