Couldn't agree more...My old history teacher was an objectionable old harridan, but she did instil one pearl of wisdom into me:
"A friend in need is not a friend."

She was a stupid old harridan too thenas the meaning of the saying is about having a friend during one's own time of need, rather than having a needy friend.
