I was invited out to an expensive dinner with the company CEO, his wife, and a client.Half a bottle of wine later (it doesn't take much to make my standards start slipping) we were discussing jewellery. I loudly proclaimed that I can't stand pearls, 'cos I think they always look crap. Silence. Loooong silence. And a bit more silence, just for good measure. Then I noticed that the CEO's wife was wearing a triple-string necklace of huge pearls, with matching pearl earrings. I found out later that her father owns Australia's largest pearl fishing business. That was my last dinner invite from the CEO.
