This is a question Turning into your parents

Unable to hold back the genetic tide, I find myself gardening in my carpet slippers, asking for a knife and fork in McDonalds and agreeing with the Daily Telegraph. I'm beyond help - what about you?

Thanks to b3th for the suggestion

Is that sarcasm?
If not, how is it sensible?

I'm not meaning to sound like an arse, just I always discredited my (grand)parents telling me this because I was under the assumption the trapped air between your clothing layers would warm up inside, thus keeping you warmer outside.

But
You're then going from whatever temperature it is inside plus a few more degrees into whatever it is outside, so it'll actually feel colder because of it being a bigger difference.

But if you go outside, then put your coat on, it's a smaller difference and you're then warming yourself up, so you'll feel warmer than you were before putting the coat on.

Least, I believe that's how it's meant to work
