I think they're okayif you spend a fortune on cleaning stuff, have just the right sort of water and make sure to keep everything properly separated.
Which is why I hand wash stuff too. Though I have succumbed to the dishwasher for bowls/plates if I'm in a rush, there are people coming over and have other stuff to do.
