I think nothing saps the spirit quite like being halfway into your route, hitting foul weather; and finding your boots leak.

Likwise, nothing makes people smugger than being out with someone else whose boots start leaking. I saw it happen to a couple of other walkers; and even from a safe distance away, I took a reading measured at 25,000 millismugs per hour (which is almost as high as you can go without holding a croissant).
