Mrs teddy bear's mum gave me this advice for our 3 day old little girl:
"She only cries if she is hungry, gassy or needs changing. Use a process of elimination". Works a treat!

Don't forget...
...tired. But yes, just running down the above list won't get you far wrong. If it's none of those - just stop fussing, and let her sleep! I worked on the same principle and it worked out just fine.
One thing that makes it easier is if they're exclusively breast-feeding you can pretty much never bother with "gassy" - just doesn't really happen apparently. That makes it a really short list!
Also - they're not made of china. Just get on with whatever you need to do (e.g. cutting nails) with confidence - they'll be fine.
