I experienced this when I lived in Oklahoma for a year.Yes, there are ignorant people everywhere, but the ignorance of back-woods Americans is without rival or comparison. I remember a legendary bit from 'are you smarter than a 5th grader' (watched purely to gain a sense of superiority, of course), in which the question was 'Budapest is the capital of which European country?' The confused contestant said 'I thought Europe was a country!', before guessing 'France'. It's forgiveable not to know that Budapest is the capital of Hungary, but she really went all out for ignorance. 'Twas brilliant.
