could be where the expression 'keeping the score' comes from.

Sounds plausible I might start telling people that.
Also I don't think it's a bizarre habit it's just sensible as it allows you to count a lot faster than saying the proper numbers. The fastest way is to count in multiples of 10 obviously but I still often do it in scores myself for some reason.
