never ever say anything in an email
that you wouldnt say face to face.
A, its just good manners.
B, ive lost a job because i didnt adhere to this one 'weird old tip'

My general rules of thumb
1. If it's safe and completely defensible, e-mail it.
2. If you want to reduce the risk of having a record kept, phone.
3. If you really, really don't want a record kept and they're likely to react badly, go and see them face to face, as you can get away with more stuff if you smile.
4. If you really, really don't want a record kept and they're likely to punch you, get someone else to tell them.
