I think that Jews are convinced they are a race.Is it not the case that different religions were differet races, to begin with, then the colour issue came up and overtook the original meaning?

Semite includes all the Arabic peoples, or, specifically, the followers of Shem, but you may well be right it started off as racial.But certainly now, saying "anti-Semite" in response to anti-Jewish abuse is as ridiculous as a white Christian claiming anti-Christian abuse is anti-Caucasianism.
