People that drink soft drinks in restaurantsspend just as much as people who drink alcoholic drinks due to the obscene mark ups on soft drinks. So that's not an argument.

Not entirely true.A pint costs around 3.20-3.50 where we are.
A Diet Coke is exactly £1. Even if he were drinking pints of it, he's still 1.20-1.50 better off.
I agree that it's not much of an argument though - especially since that difference in drinks prices he's had back many, many times in free/heavily discounted meals.
