WE didn't ship the religious nutterists off.They left of their own accord. Because the Taliban-esque religious nutterism that prevailed at the time in Britain ie banning xmas, whipping people for whistling, hanging witches, saddling their children with names like If Christ Had Not Died For Thee Thou Wouldst Be Damned, etc JUST WASN'T REPRESSIVE ENOUGH.

Almost...Some lingered on in Northern Ireland, the last place in the world where the Catholic vs. Protestant bollocks is STILL going on. It's over 400 years old, give it a rest.
