For many nights after I was kept awake by the stench of the inaccessable rotting carcasses of a family of possums that had perished in the ceiling above my bed.

of 'Pitter Patter' (sounds of blowing twice). And it turned out the mice were running up and down on the hot water pipe but had to stop to cool their paws off by blowing on to them.

and for two weeks lived behind the walls of the house. You could sometimes hear him scampering around. Then one day when I got in from school there he was, leaning on the hallway radiator valve completely covered in dust. He was quite a character.

It still surprises me how heavy possums can sound when wandering around in the roof cavity. As a child, I too was convinced those footsteps above must be ghosts rather than small animals - the noise just doesn't fit.
