When I was a kid, I was often kept awake by unexplained sounds and footsteps coming from the ceiling above my bed
Then my dad peeled up the steel roofing and put rat poison there.
For many nights after I was kept awake by the stench of the inaccessable rotting carcasses of a family of possums that had perished in the ceiling above my bed.

My old man used to have a tall story about people being kept awake at night by the sound
of 'Pitter Patter' (sounds of blowing twice). And it turned out the mice were running up and down on the hot water pipe but had to stop to cool their paws off by blowing on to them.

When I was a kid one of my pet hamsters escaped
and for two weeks lived behind the walls of the house. You could sometimes hear him scampering around. Then one day when I got in from school there he was, leaning on the hallway radiator valve completely covered in dust. He was quite a character.

It still surprises me how heavy possums can sound when wandering around in the roof cavity. As a child, I too was convinced those footsteps above must be ghosts rather than small animals - the noise just doesn't fit.
