This week Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, died. A whole generation of pasty dice-obsessed nerds owes him big time. Me included.
So, in his honour, how nerdy were you? Are you still sunlight-averse? What are the sad little things you do that nobody else understands?
As an example, a B3ta regular who shall remain nameless told us, "I spent an entire school summer holiday getting my BBC Model B computer to produce filthy stories from an extensive database of names, nouns, adjectives, stock phrases and deviant sexual practices. It revolutionised the porn magazine dirty letter writing industry for ever.
Revel in your own nerdiness.

Indeed, I've only ever seen the original one (or the fourth one or whatever the fuck it is) and the Return of the Jedi, and have no interest in seeing the rest.
However....
I have played a jazz session with R2D2.
This is absolutely true.
Admittedly he was in the form of the diminutive human inside, better known on this earth as Kenny Baker, but he's rather a fine mouth organ player and I ended up having a jam with him at the Silverstone Grand Prix in 1997.
(Yes, that's a bizarre place for it, but I'll explain if you're interested)

And reading the tale should pass some more time today before I can go on holiday.

"Baker played harmonica with the James Coutts Scottish Dance Band at Hugh McCaig's Silverstone Party in July 1997."

But yes, that was indeed the event in question.
Bugger me, who put that on Wikipedia? I didn't read the article!
Yes, Hugh McCaig is a member of the BRDC and invited James and the band to Silverstone for the Grand Prix weekend. Being a fan of F1, to the extent of having travelled all over the world to watch it (is that nerdy enough?) I jumped at the chance.
We had three big camper vans in the central enclosure, with a tarpaulin over the top, and we were entertaining the masses for three nights. On the Saturday before the race, there must have been a good couple of hundred people there, when I looked across and saw a little bloke standing next to me. ""Scuse me, fellas", he said. "D'you know Blue Moon? In C?"
"Sure, we'll play it in whatever key you like", I replied. So out came the mouth organ, and we set up a mic for him, and off we went. He played a few jazz standards, to great audience appreciation, then we asked who he was. When he told us, my mate recognised the name and asked, "Are you R2D2?".
The response came in the affirmative, and we felt rather pleased with ourselves!
