I would have taken a few notes from the middleapparently if you take half a dozen notes from the middle of a hefty wad, when it gets sucked back in, the machine doesn't register the loss.

Sorry, urban mythIn the early days of ATMs this was true, but not now, certainly not for the last 15 years.
