Just throw a shoe. You take your chances with the fiddly channel and volume controls, but failing all else it can generally manage 'off'.

I solved the 'lost remote' problem...
...by glueing it to the top of the t.v. - now I always know where it is.
However, there are one or two small 'bugs' in this solution...
