Phobias
What gives you the heebie-jeebies?
It's a bit strong to call this a phobia, but for me it's the thought of biting into a dry flannel. I've no idea why I'd ever want to or even get the opportunity to do so, seeing as I don't own one, but it makes my teeth hurt to think about it. *ewww*
Tell us what innocent things make you go pale, wobbly and send shivers down your spine.

This story
from Andrew Lang's Red Fairy Book
"The Voice of Death"
Yes, this is a fairy tale. For a child.
In the name of all that is holy, never read this to your six year old kid unless you really hate them. Yeah, thanks mum. Maybe that explains the severe mental illness, eh?

Not a bad story premise.
But no, not for kids.
Then again, fairy tales were not originally meant for kids...

I've got all of the coloured Fairy Books in the series, they're fantastic. I love the illustrations as well. I didn't think anyone else knew about them!

true,
fairy stories are really not child-oriented. I particularly like the sexual connotations in Sleeping Beauty.
Yup, I have those books BobFossil, but I'm too traumatised to re-read 'em...

I've been thinking
about re-writing some of the original fairy tales and bringing them more up-to-date, using them as a sort of jumping-off point. This one in particular would be good for that.
I also want to do the same with Lovecraft. The man had some wonderfully creepy ideas, but he was a terrible writer...

Re-read them!
Avoid the ones that you really hate, but the stories are so beautifully written that it'd be a shame not to read them again!

If you haven't already, read the Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, in which she does a similar thing. Her version of Puss in Boots is especially good.

Andrew Lang's books
Fantastic reading! I worked my way through most of them when I was a small precocious child. Revisited them as both an undergrad and post-grad along with Angela Carter's Bloody Chamber.
Even did a performance piece (when I was an art student) based on The Juniper Tree - scared the living daylights out of my audience. Fun.
