Similar thing in Germany...in Germany, St. Niklaus visits a couple of days earlier than Xmas (Baby Jesus personally bringing presents on Xmas Eve - I think it's all down to some sort of franchise or something), and Nick brings with him a similar fellow by the name of "Knecht Ruprecht" - a charming chap who will beat any children who haven't been good.
You should see the effect he can have on kids. Even the threat of him - ie just Niklaus appearing at the door, to the more guilt-ridden kids, can have them screaming and crying.
