Uranium-235Is used not because it gives off energy when it splits (yes, there are other materials that will do that) but because when it does split - a process begun by the U235 molecule interacting with a particle called a slow neutron - it will release three more slow neutrons. This means that the reaction is self-sustaining and will keep running without the need for a constant external source of slow neutrons.
