Habit.I've accidentally gotten into the habit of adding desu to anyone who says "ahh sooo" in attempts at lacism. I don't know when it happened. But I've taken to correcting their grammar rather than waggling a finger at the rather 1980's behaviour.
Oddly I find most people respond surprisingly well to learning they do actually, almost, speak a bit of genuine Japanese already :D
