um
i worked for the third largest auto insurer in america as a claims examiner. i wasn't the one who looked at the cars, i was the one who got the police reports and interviewed the drivers & witnesses and figured out how much percentage of fault each person had and what we were contractually obligated to pay. i defended my clients in binding arbitrations and assigned attorneys when they went to suit. i cut the checks. i, and my friends, and my supervisors, and even my department managers, all calculated these things with objectivity and paid what we owed. if you tell me you upgraded your stereo in your car to the kind of thing that buzzed windowframes and knocked pictures off of walls as you drive through neighborhoods and yet couldn't prove it, i didn't pay. if you told me that my policyholder crushed $500 worth of groceries in the trunk of your car when he crashed into it and gave me a receipt, i gave you an extra 500 bucks. it was how we all rolled. i'm sorry you've had a bad time. some companies are fuckers *cough*allstate*cough*. not all of them are. get some advice from your friends and family and if your parents have been with a company for 40 years and they like 'em, maybe you should give them a try too.

In the US, that's probably true, but I think we're talking about Insurance Companies that operate inside Treasure Island (UK).
Large companies seem to have free range to do as they please when it comes to consumers cash, and act with impunity.
