my mate broke his back a week ago....
he came off his bike going down a hill, and managed to knock himself out as well so he can't remember the crash. He was hurty all over and we were worried about the gash on his head. So we sat for a bit while we looked him over for concussion or issues from him smacking his head, then bundled him into a landy and continued on the pub for dinner and beer. He still wasn't feeling great so we decided to send him off to A&E to get checked out.
Anyway, he waited for about 4 hours, being periodically poked by the nurse (apparently that's how they initially diagnose broken vertibrae) and they asked to bend over and wiggle about to see what kind of range of movement he had (!?!) They were about to discharge him when twas decided that maybe an xray was best after all.
When the results came back they ran out to where he was waiting and instructed him not to budge an inch til they got a brace on him.
