This is a question Question of the Week suggestions

Each week we ask a question. The idea is to generate material that's:

* interesting to read, i.e. we won't get bored of reading the answers after about 10 of them
* not been asked on this site before
* fun to answer

What would you like to ask? (We've left this question open - so feel free to drop in ideas anytime.)

regional words
following on from the nintendo ds not recognising dopey northerners....

i married a dopey northerner - she calls an alleyway a "ten-foot" or a snicket; calls an off licence (or offie) a "beer-off"; a woodlouse a pig (WTF?) and i had never heard the word mardy til i met her.... it certainly increased my enjoyment of those cheeky arctic's and their "mardy bum" song

i listen to the arctic monkeys you know - i'm dead cool!

what other regional terms do people use??

In Edinburgh
they were

alleyway = vennel
off licence = Haddows (they had no competition)
woodlouse = slater

mardy? no idea what that means

Vennels
Interesting, TWW. The only other places I've seen with vennels are Perth and Dumfries. In Dundee they're called pends and in many other parts of Scotland, closes.

K2k6..
we Scots could probably do this one on our own, there are so many regional variations. In West Lothian they call a drain a "stank" but where I live its a "siver" (to rhyme with sigh) and we're only a few miles apart.
