Im sure she just "mis-spoke"!
My mum was,and is, a bit on the racist side. I can always remember her going into a furniture shop in East London, that even 30 odd years ago was predominently of the "forrin" persuasion, and asking the assistant if they had a 3 piece suite in "nigger brown"! No prizes for guessing of what racial persuasion said assistant was, who took it remarkably well all things considered...she wasnt chased out of the shop, to my amazement.
She did apologise admittedly, it was just the casual way she came out with it.

I'm sure I've seen furniture labelled as "Nigger Brown".
Possibly as late as the early nineties.

Wool
also comes in "nigger brown", as I found out while chatting to an old lady patient while I was a receptionist and crocheting while I worked on the desk. I was making the obligatory smalltalk when she dropped the phrase into the conversation, much to my astonishment having never heard it before. It used to be widely recognised as a specific shade, apparently.

My mates grandma recently went into a wool shop and requested "nigger brown" wool. It used to be a real colour...

That sees absolutely no racism in this? Newsflash; dark-skinned folk have dark coloured skin. how is a colour racist?

Nigger brown?
I believe they still use this as a colour description in China, so evry so often something gets exported to places where the term has become unaccceptable, often with hilarious consequences.

P.S. I used to have a paintbox with "nigger black" in it - but I think that had survived since the 1950's....
