When......after 40 minutes of ranting about how she hated her job, and her boss was a waste of space, I suggested that she might want to change jobs, that I'd help her find a new one.
Her reply of "I don't want help, You're not here to help! You're just here so I've got someone I can scream at!"
Rather told me how valued I was...

Men try to solve problems...... but for most women that's just wrong - all they want is to vent. After nearly 20 years of marriage I've finally got the hang of keeping my gob shut and feigning interest until she stops for breath.

That's your mistake right there - waiting until she stops for breath. The correct action is either a) hold up a hand and ask her how long she's going to be bellowing, and arrange to come back when she's done, or b) turn on your heel when she starts and come down the pub. I'll buy you a pint.
