Now that may sound daft, but the radiation emitted by radioactive materials like cobalt-60 is often used to sterilise food before it goes on sale.That said, the food is kept in a crate while it's being sterilised, so it wouldn't become radioactive itself unless the crate broke and its contents came into contact with the radiation source.
