Couldn't you have asked him for the specifics, before wasting your time on doing it wrong?
I constantly have to deal with customers who don't have the faintest idea what they want and what is realistically achievable.
If I just went ahead and gave them what I thought they wanted instead of what they really wanted we'd never get anything done.
