It is the train station as apposed to the bus station.or the coach station or an underground or tube station or tram station or any other kind of station you care to mention.
By your logic an airport should be simply 'port' rather than airport. Airport is a contraction of air and port which makes means of that you will travel by it easily identifiable, much like seaport.
