fair point but...... you could make the case that both genders were trapped in highly constrained roles for quite some time and where men could be violent, anti-social, controlling and got killed in wars, women could be bitchy, manipulative and got raped 'because they were asking for it' ... neither was really very good ... so what we used to do has been used as a template for what happens *now*, but what happens *next* is up to us to decide ...
