Do it!
Honestly, it's much better, at least you'll know.
I've been through a very similar experience recently, fancied one of my best friends for years, flirted quite a bit, then I went to Canada for a few months. Liked it so much, decided to stay, but popped back the UK first for a couple of months to wrap things up. My friend finally thought then was a good time to go out with me for a short time, just before I was intending to leave the country for good. I left, we were sad. I've been in Canada over a year now, but long story short, I was back at christmas, proposed and she said yes. She's now moving over here in a month or so.
It might not work out, but you might as well give it a shot, wonderful things may come of it. Good luck
