Until I was well into my teens,I thought airing cupboards were really called Aering cupboards, because they were named after their Swedish inventor, one Mr. Aering.
In fairness, "airing cupboard" is a bloody stupid thing to call a totally enclosed, pitch-black hot space that has virtually no air.
