Wizard of geography
I was working in the International Dept - we handled all the business outside of the US. Accounting lady comes down the hall and hands me an overdue invoice. It's from a company in New Mexico. I pointed this out. She says, "Well, New Mexico is a foreign country, isn't it?" Stunned, I just nodded politely and told her we'd take care of it...

I was born in NM, and we love these stories!
But, if not foreign, NM is a little *different*. I like the visitors who earnestly try to bond with the native peoples even though they knew nothing about them half-an-hour ago. My mom liked to laugh about the English visitor who pronounced the names of the Hopi and Cochiti Indians as 'Hoppy' and 'Coshitti', and resisted correction. His intention was to spend six months with them, I believe. The Hopis probably thought he was a Navajo spy....
