My Grandpa....who will be mentioned several times during this QOTW, solved your volume-adjusting problem by cutting a wedge out of the end of his broomstick-remote which fit around the volume knob. Also, he plugged the TV into the power-point next to his bed, so that he could just turn it off at the mains.
