As a child I didnt see the body of the clown as being just that - it always looked like a green skull with a pink nose looking towards the girl. The yellow buttons looked like spots of light shining off the skull.
I still have difficulty seeing it as a clown body.

I was going to say something about the 'body'...I used to think it was down to my crap 70's TV making it look like an odd novelty ballon smeared with plasticine and ectoplasm, but now I can see what you mean about the skull...
