It must have been a tough decision...
If you're on steps, facing away from them would mean that any logging, would be placed on a step higher than your feet, so closer to your arse, facing the other way, would mean deposits are made on a lower step, thus reducing likelihood of mishaps from sitting it it. That said, facing uphill, would have the disadvantage of meaning you're more likely to fall. I really hope I don't have to poo on some stairs in a hurry, I'd never be able to decide which way to face
