You just described what happened to me
My ancient cat had disappeared, and despite frantic searching and tours of the streets, doorknocking etc. I never found him, alive or dead.
Lying in bed, crying, about a month later, I felt him jump onto my bed, walk across my foot and lie down between my legs like he always used to.

I had no other cats. I was not asleep. I was not dreaming. I felt weight, individual paw steps. I lifted my head - there was no cat there, but I could still feel his weight. When alive, Jazzy was nearly 9kg, a big Manx and I felt that he was telling me that he was dead, and not to worry anymore about whether he would ever come home.

And now I'm crying again, nearly 9 years after his disappearance, just remembering this.
