"The lights were flickering." they were on the blink for a while her bloke never got round to fixing them and now he's dead so can't.

"The cd they had playing kept jumping" see previous - as lights.

"several heavy thuds from upstairs" - the cats are anxious too. They have been hiding upstairs since the bloke went away and keep knocking over the boxes of his stuff in her bedroom

"that's him! he's speaking to us!" - that's the drink, and the grief.

It's a bummer when someone dies. Eddie just mixes with the wrong crowd.
