I'm pretty sure that what you saw was a badger.
I presume the railway has some kind of embankment or elevated position in relation to where you were standing.
A badger is perfectly capable of standing on its hind legs and the combination of the two would give the illusion of something much taller.
I do a lot of wildlife tracking/spotting and the noises that these fellas make is quite something. They crash through undergrowth and make all sorts of snorting/grunting noises.
They have forward facing eyes, poor eyesight and a milky reflection when you shine a torch on them.
