Anybody familiar with the online takeaway ordering site Just-Eat? I'm fairly sure they took the idea on Dragon's Den.

Anyway, in 2003 I had the exact same idea. I registered the domain above and knocked up a site. I nicked the design from a warez site, created a database in Access and coded it in asp. One could search and then display the menus of the takeaways. After six weeks I had maybe 40% of the functionality complete. Not bad considering that it was the very first server side programming I'd ever done.

But then I got fed up and shelved the project for a bit. The site needed finishing but I knew I had no accumen to pull off the marketing. In the end I gave up on it. I'd go back to it every six months but nothing ever came of it.

A few months after the just eat site was launched, my brother rang me and told me about it and asked me why don't I finish the site. A quick google session showed that there had been many 'me too' sites set up afterwards.

Ah well, it was a decent programming exercise anyway.

I did this some years ago: thatfoodsite.co.uk (that wasn't the original domain name), set it up - got very little interest, forgot about it.

...until someone told me that they'd seen something similar on Dragon's Den. I then realised that the domain had expired (I can't even remember what it was now), so I redesigned the site and started again.

Then I remembered why I didn't completely finish it last time.

I heared that Bannatine bloke on the radio the other day talking about how the one he had invested in was a dead donkey and advising people against ever thinking of it.

That although they went for it at first, they realised that it'd need a shitload of transactions to make any decent money on it.

some years ago (10 I think)
some mates and I were working as website designers. We had a site for ourselves to practice our skills, but it also became a site where we could communicate with each other, post photos and caption them etc. we'd organise parties using it and generally let each other, and other mates know what events were going on.

we were working on some database driven stuff at the time, where you could log in and upload info and pics and suchlike.

We all then went off to uni to do various things and our site (getwrecked.com) got left to expire.

some years later and the conversation pretty much went "Fuck! we almost invented Facebook!"
