Back when i was a nipper
The house at the end of the street really didn't fit in with the character of the area, (being situated in its own not inconsiderable grounds and not being terraced). It was a very old building and very large, built with a lot of wood. It had also been derelict for years and at some point had been badly damaged by a fire which had left the interior gutted but mainly intact.

Now this would normally have been heaven for my eight year old self and the group of snotty nosed, parker clad mates i used to hang around with. A big old building of our very own to kick around in after school, a veritable treasure trove of rooms to explore and games to play. That was if it wasn't for the burned man. The burned man was rumored to haunt the place. The tormented shade of the last resident, trapped inside his house by a falling beam and left to burn to death in the most horrible way possible. It was said you could still see the scratch marks on the floor and walls where he had tried to claw his way out to freedom. Such tales were passed around the school yard and in later years told to the younger kids to ensure that none would be lost to the burned man.
As such we were all too scared go in and none of the local kids went near the place in case they encountered this gruesome revenant.

Much much later i was talking to one of the older residents of the area whose family had lived around there for years. He told me that it used to be a grand old house who's last owner, a little old lady, had died in a nursing home. The fire had been started after the old lady died either by vandals or, if the local gossip mongers were right, as part of an insurance fraud. Certainly no one had died in there.

The house is long gone now as are the grounds. The remains of the house were bulldozed while i was in secondary school and the area where it stood is occupied by quite a few new build houses. I still tell my kids the legend of the burned man. Its only right to keep these myths going.
