Waste of money
I once paid a small fortune to a solicitor in a legal case. She got lost on the way to court, turned up late with the wrong papers and started an argument with the judge, who told her to "shut up, for the love of God". A stunning investment.
Thanks to golddust for the suggestion

Unfortunately that's all too often the case
Although YOU may be a careful driver, there are idiots out there who you end up paying for.
Idiots like the teenager who drove his sister's car into the front wheel of mine last year. Miraculously no body damage, but the damage to steering and suspension came to almost four grand. This went even higher when his insurers believed his story that he didn't actually hit my car when his suspension "spontaneously collapsed" in the road right alongside it, but my insurers believed my neighbour's statement that he'd have wiped her out if my car hadn't been in the way, and issued court proceedings to claim the repair money, plus my excess, plus solicitors costs, plus interest.
I read this story in our local paper last week and thought it might be the same driver but as far as I can tell it's yet another fucktard who'll no doubt kill himself on the road soon enough.
Drive something cheap-to-insure and build up your no-claims, you'll be in the realm of almost-affordable insurance soon enough. Adding a parent as a named driver may lower the premium, as may going for something that's not chav-as-fuck (i.e. a 1.2 Clio/Saxo/Corsa with a tailpipe like a paint can and Pepe-le-Pew stripes over the roof). My first car was an old Corolla estate, would've been about 12 years old when I had it. Not that quick (1.3 8-valve) but no slouch either, and the pair of hi-fi loudspeakers in the boot packed a nice punch without fitting an amp!
