We asked our lecturer that. She ummed and erred for a bit, and then said that "Shakespeare was a great genius, and wanted the ghost to be Hamlet's psyche, but he was writing for an uneducated audience and they wouldn't have accepted that. Or the guards were pissed. One or the other..."

It's annoyingbecause it's an equally brilliant piece of work if you accept that the ghost is a ghost.
